Lost Maples State Natural Area is located on the Sabinal River in the Texas Hill Country, 5 miles north of Vanderpool, and approximately two hours northwest of San Antonio, Texas.

With 2,900 acres with diverse terrain, including steep, rugged limestone canyons, crystal clear springs, seasonal wildflowers, and spectacular fall foliage Lost Maples is well known for its spectacular fall foliage display but is a year-round destination that offers so much more.

 

If you're planning a visit to the Texas Hill Country consider adding Lost Maples to your trip for a day hike, a picnic lunch, or for a few days to relax and enjoy the wonders the park has to offer.

Recreational activities abound with over 10 miles of hiking trails, several short biking trails, fishing ponds, picnic and camping facilities, and stargazing under the dark, pristine night sky.

 

For the adventurer seeking a true back-country experience, Lost Maples offers primitive backpack in campsites for those looking to really escape and enjoy the natural habitat. Avid birders will find over 200 species of birds in the park, including the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler and the recently delisted Black-capped Virio.

 

Lost Maples truly is a special place, so much so that it was designated as the very first State Natural Area in Texas, and in 1980 the Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service designated Lost Maples as a national natural landmark. So, if you're passing through the Texas Hill Country stop by Lost Maples for a hike, a picnic or to spend a few days camping and enjoying nature at its best!
